It was also really important for me to find a provider that understands how autism can present differently in women.

I had a very positive experience with Affirming Autism. Ruth and Natalie were both very thorough, professional and understanding in their questioning and assessment. I would definitely recommend them. A stress free and very helpful assessment and I have a better understanding of myself as a result.
Affirming Autism made the entire process from start to finish, including the screening appointment, actual assessment and follow up appointment incredibly comfortable. "Everything was really informative from the start to finish about what to expect. I sent several emails before the assessment and they were all responded to in a timely way. Natalie and Ruth conducted the assessment in a way that really supported my daughter to feel able to engage, relax and feel less anxious. I worried that the assessment would be too long to do in one session and we were given the opportunity to split the session if needed. But because of the individualised approach that Natalie and Ruth took my daughter did manage to complete the full assessment in one appointment. We received the report really quickly and had a follow up appointment to discuss any questions."

Throughout the process they were supportive and reassuring. I did find that I was so utterly drained, mentally and emotionally, by the anticipation of the assessment that I found it hard to communicate effectively. Thankfully both Ruth and Natalie helped me through and teased out the information needed. Three, plus hours was exhausting but I’m not sure that I would have wanted to split it up. By the end I was too tired to think. I have just completed their Autism Screening process. For me, taking this first step was really helpful in deciding whether to go for a full Diagnostic Assessment.
I received confirmation of the appointment, along with the associated paperwork, within a day of making contact, and the actual appointment was held within the week.
Ruth, who led the screening, was quick to set my worries at rest. She was calm, professional and friendly, taking her time to talk through the various areas of challenge I face, rephrasing where necessary. She had read some extra notes that I had sent along with the questionnaire, which helped me feel more relaxed talking about my own specific experience. Throughout, I felt that the screening was totally fitted around my needs, very well designed, and has built my confidence on this important journey.
The report (that arrived just one day later) was extremely thorough, with an amazing amount of the detail that I had shared. It helpfully categorised my experiences into key areas (Social Interaction, Sensory Needs, etc.), and gave me clear recommendations as to my next step.

My experience with Affirming Autism was a very positive one.
As a high masking female, seeking an Autism diagnosis at age 53, I wasn't sure whether my assessors would be able to 'see behind the mask'. However, Ruth and Natalie were both very thorough and treated me with kindness and compassion. I would highly recommend Affirming Autism to others, especially older females.
